The Department of Theory and Practice of Translation was established in 1999 within the framework of the International Humanitarian Institute of BSU and was originally called the Department of Modern Foreign Languages. The department joined the Faculty of Humanities in 2009, receiving a new name – the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation. Subsequently, the Faculty of Humanities was transformed into the Faculty of Social and Cultural Communications.
For more than 15 years, the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation has been training specialists in the specialty "Modern Foreign Languages (Translation)". Since 2023, the academic stuff of the department has also been providing training in the Bachelor's degree course ''Translation Studies (with languages indicated)''.
Students of the specialty "Translation (including languages)", specialty "Modern Foreign Languages (Translation)":
- are actively involved in the life of the faculty and the university,
- assist in organizing and conducting international scientific, sports and cultural events, acting as interpreters, within the framework of extracurricular translation practice,
- are engaged in research work with the guidance of experienced lecturers of the department.
Our graduates work in major international companies, become managers and administrators of commercial enterprises; pursue graduate and postgraduate studies both in the Republic of Belarus and overseas, have the opportunity to become scientists. In addition to practical work in their specialty, they also master the skills necessary for research and business communication.
The Department of Theory and Practice of Translation participates in the organization of annual scientific events: the international scientific and practical conference "Linguistic personality and effective communication in the modern multicultural world"; the international scientific and educational forum of young translators named after D.O. Polovtsev "Linguistic personality and translation"; the international literary translation competition "Flowers from foreign fields".
The Department has established a student research circle "Litera" - operational and thriving to this day.
